Gloucester Gates is the brainchild of Joel Sheely – a passionate craftsman with a rural upbringing, a deep appreciation for Australian hardwood, and an eye for timeless design. Together with his wife Deborah, Joel also owns and operates Gloucester Landscapes, a well-established local landscaping business known for its quality workmanship and personal service.
The inspiration for Gloucester Gates came naturally. After relocating their family to the rolling hills and scenic valleys of Gloucester, New South Wales, Joel spent his days quoting and working on landscape projects across the region. As he travelled the countryside, one thing kept catching his eye – the many once-beautiful, now weather-worn hardwood gates standing at the entrance to rural properties. It sparked an idea: what if these gates could be restored, reimagined, or rebuilt to honour both their function and their heritage?
Over time, as Gloucester Landscapes grew, so did Joel and Deb’s vision. They eventually moved their business into the old butter factory – a space that offered both character and room to grow. With the installation of a workshop, they began taking on more custom timber projects.
It was here that Gloucester Gates truly took shape. What started as a sideline project evolved into a specialised craft, with the workshop now primarily dedicated to designing and building bespoke hardwood gates. Each gate is a celebration of locally sourced Australian hardwood, built with care, and made to last – a blend of traditional values and modern design.
